Social Development
Beyond the important physical health benefits youth sports provide, youth sports can do wonders for a child's development. According to a 2005 study by Fraser-Thomas, Côté & Deakin, youth sports contribute to the 5 C' s of positive child development:
Competence- Developing skills and abilities.
Confidence- Building self-esteem and belief in oneself.
Character- Fostering moral values and integrity.
Connections- Forming positive relationships with others.
Compassion- Developing empathy and concern for others
Builds Strong Habits
It is important for youth to learn skills such as time management and hard work early on. Youth sports teach the youth these beneficial skills by requiring a time commitment and showing that practicing and dedication lead to improvement. Kids in sports form strong habits (like discipline and focus) and learn how to manage a busy schedule, which can benefit them throughout their lives both inside and outside of sports.
Mental and Emotional Benefits
In the midst of their busy schedules, youth can become easily overwhelmed. Anxiety and stress plague the youth, so it is important for kids to have an outlet to relieve stress. Sports teach kids emotional resilience through wins and losses, teaching mental health skills that benefit can provide lifelong mental benefits to youth.
